Superstar Rajinikanth stirred a hornet’s nest on Monday evening with his comments on issues such as release of convicts in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case, demonetisation and opposition parties’ stand against the BJP.
Speaking to reporters at the Chennai airport, he said, “The demonetisation scheme was not implemented properly. We need a discussion on it.” He was responding to a question on the second anniversary of demonetisation.
Pointing out to opposition’s efforts to unite against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a reporter asked: “Does this show that the BJP is posing grave threat?” To this, the superstar’s reply was: “If everybody thinks that way, definitely it could be.”
Asked about the Centre’s decision on Rajiv convicts, he first replied: “Which seven persons?”. Then he said: “I am not aware of it. I have just reached here.” His remarks on the above three issues created a debate in political circles and on social media.
It may be recalled when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation in 2016, Rajini welcomed it and tweeted: “Hats off @narendramodi ji. New india is born #JaiHind.”
