Refuting Bharathiraja’s associate Suresh’s claim that the story of Vijay Sethupathi-Trisha Krishnan starrer ’96’ was lifted from his script which was written in 2012, director Prem Kumar has said the story was not copied.
Speaking to the media recently, Suresh said Bharathiraja has expressed interest to direct the film and also roped in Ilayaraja to compose music but due to various reasons, the project did not materialise.
Stating that he had narrated the story to ‘Asuravadham’ director Marudhupandian who has been thanked in the title credits of ’96’, Suresh said, “Marudhupandian could have narrated my story to Prem Kumar.”
However, Prem has denied these charges. He said, “Marudhu only participated in the discussion for just two days. When ‘Premam’ got released, many compared it with ‘Autograph’. Even my film was compared with ‘Autograph’ but Cheran sir denied it. ’96’ is not a unique story, such schooldays love would have happened in anyone’s life.”
He also said that after ’96’ hit the screens, director Nalan Kumarasamy of ‘Soodhu Kavvum’ fame had told him that he had a similar story.
