The controversy over the final resting place of DMK leader and five-time Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, M Karunanidhi, finally came to an end with the court granting a decision in favour of the DMK, bringing joy in a painful moment to his countless supporters.
Following this, Karunanidhi’s mortal remains were taken to Marina beach to be laid to rest near the memorial of his mentor Annadurai.
Thousands of DMK cadres, including wailing women and people from various walks of life, paid a tearful adieu as the final journey of the 94-year-old DMK leader began from Rajaji hall at 4 pm.
Amid the anxious moments, DMK working president M K Stalin appealed for calm and requested the cadres to peacefully disperse after paying homage.
Earlier, a host of leaders from across the country, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid tributes. Even as the crowd began to swell multi-fold by noon, barricades placed by police in the sprawling premises off arterial Anna Salai to regulate crowds were strewn away at several locations.
