Kamal Haasan has made a serious charge that RK Nagar by-election victory was a purchased one as people sold themselves for money.
Writing in his weekly column in ‘Ananda Vikatan’, he said both the ruling party (AIADMK) and an independent candidate (TTV Dhinakaran) offered money and people pressed the button for those who promised more.
“RK Nagar bypoll is a big stain on Tamil Nadu politics; it is a big stain on Indian democracy. I won’t call this purchased win even a scam….this is a day light crime,” he said. He also said it was like begging from a thief.
Reacting sharply, Dhinakaran said, “This doesn’t befit his age and experience. Under the garb of attacking the winner, he is attacking the people, who are mainly from poorer sections, saying they voted for money.”
“Whether you accept or not, people of RK Nagar have voted for me. Don’t hurt those loveable people,” he added.
Senior AIADMK leader Fisheries minister D Jayakumar said, “We contested in RK Nagar only by keeping hopes on people, not on money. Kamal’s comments that we bribed voters in the constituency are condemnable.”
