Amid warnings and threats from protesters, the city is getting ready to host Indian Premier League cricket match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders this evening.
An unprecedented number of 4,000 police personnel are on duty to prevent any untoward incidents from happening. Commando forces have also been pressed into service.
Black dress has been banned and roads leading to Chepauk stadium have been sealed. Strict action has been planned against agitators.
A few pro-Tamil organisations, including a newly formed association of Kollywood filmmakers, have called for cancellation of the match today, failing which ‘protests will be conducted’.
Speaking to the media, director Bharathiraja, one of the members of Tamizhar Kalai Ilakkiya Panpaattu Peravai, said, At a time when the youngsters of Tamil Nadu are protesting for setting up the Cauvery Water Management Board and against Sterlite, the popular T20 tournament seems to be an event that is being staged to divert them from their goal.”
