Controversy’s favourite child Amala Paul is in the news once again. This time, she has made a serious allegation- that a man had sexually harassed her. And the police have immediately arrested him.
The series of events started on Wednesday (January 31) evening, when Amala walked into Mambalam police station and filed a complaint, that she was harassed when she was at a dance school in T Nagar on Wednesday.
As the news spread, media personnel thronged the station in large numbers. The actress, who came out of the police station, told reporters that the man used to talk with her when she was alone during the practice session for a ‘women empowerment show’ in Malaysia.
“He talks about trading me, sexually, to another person, and asks sexual favours, which was not comfortable. I was shocked and humiliated,” she said.
Accompanied by police officers, she added: “I didn’t feel safe about this and that is why I have come here, to file a complaint against him.” The actress also said that the police were very helpful and promised action.
When reporters asked who the man was, Amala said she did not know. “He knew I was there at that time. That’s why I thought it was unsafe because I am an independent working woman. So there is definitely a close source. That’s how he knew I was there at the time. I feel extremely unsafe. Someone involved at the event has only given this information.”
She said she is scheduled to perform at an event called ‘Dazzling Thamizhachi’ in Malaysia. She added that she took up the event because it is a women’s empowerment show.
Acting promptly on the complaint, police registered a case under the IPC Sections 354 (A) (making sexually coloured remarks), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Women Harassment (Prevention) Act.
The businessman, identified as Alagesan, 40, of Kottivakkam, was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
According to reports, he further told the police that he called the actress’ Malaysia number and that her manager asked him to meet her in the dance school. However, the manager denied talking to Alagesan.
Lately, actresses are coming out in open about sexual harassment issues. While a Malayalam actress made similar charges against a gang, resulting in the arrest of Dileep, actress Varalakshmi Sarathkumar alleged harassment from a TV channel official.
